Three states, three ways to license a remodeler

Washington registers contractors as general or specialty and licenses plumbing separately from either one.[1],[2]

California runs 45 different contractor classifications through its licensing board, from a general building license down to a single trade.[3]

Florida certifies contractors to work statewide or registers them for one local jurisdiction, and plumbing is its own category under the same law.[4],[5],[6]

The trade matters as much as the company

A company licensed to run your whole remodel is not automatically licensed to do your plumbing.[7]

Our guide to bathroom remodeling licenses below walks through exactly where each state draws that line.

Before you sign anything

Washington's L&I pushes homeowners toward written bids, phased payments, and a lien release from every subcontractor before that last check clears.[8]

California requires a written contract once a job passes 500 dollars and caps the down payment at 10 percent or 1,000 dollars, whichever is less.[9]

Our contract guide below covers what that means for a bathroom job specifically.

Questions people ask

Does every bathroom remodel need a permit?

Not the cosmetic parts. Swapping a toilet or vanity in place typically does not need one, but moving supply or drain lines, adding circuits, or changing the room's footprint usually does.[10]

How current are the listings on this site?

They come from each state's public license file and are rechecked on a rolling basis, which is also how we calculate the licensing snapshot shown on every city page.
